Social media company X has taken an uncommon step in an industry known for secrecy by publicly releasing the source code behind its recommendation algorithm.
Instagram has introduced ‘Your Algorithm’, an AI-powered feature that gives users direct visibility and control over the recommendations driving their Reels feed.
Earlier on the same day Musk said the algorithm sucked, X head of product Nikita Bier seemed to indicate that he was proud of it, noting that in the six months from July of 2025 to this month, daily engagement time from new users has gone from less than 20 minutes to somewhere in the mid-30s.
X has open sourced its new algorithm, with owner Elon Musk defending it as users responded to the changes with criticism.
